The perfect hedge or tree!

A stunning golden yellow conifer! That is the white cedar 'Golden Smaragd' (Thuja). Its branches grow very closely together and are flush with golden yellow scale leaves. This incredibly attractive golden white cedar is also very well suited as a solo conifer or as part of a hedge. This golden yellow conifer grows just as well and is as easy to maintain as its green brother. It can handle wind coming off the sea. If using it as a hedge, planting 5 trees for every two running metres should be plenty. Consider doubling the rows for an even thicker hedge.A strong tree that looks gorgeous!

Planting
Prepare a trench 60-80 cm deep for the Thuja occidentalis 'Golden Smaragd'. Improve the excavated soil with compost and manure. For heavy clay soil add in some sharp sand. Soak the plants in water for one hour before planting. Divide the hedges along the trench - three for every metre. You can also plant a double row for an extra wide hedge. The top of the root balls should be flush with ground level and bear in mind that some sinkage will occur). Refill the trench and give them lots of water immediately after planting - enough to make it swampy. Water regularly throughout the first year. Stand alone This conifer looks great alone if given sufficient room. It will grow in a pyramid shape, ever taller. It prefers a sunny spot in well-drained soil and does not require pruning.
Care
Thuja occidentalis 'Golden Smaragd' is a strong evergreen conifer that requires little care. Water during dry periods so that the soil does not dry out. During the winter a layer of compost and granulated cow manure will be appreciated. Thuja occidentalis ‘Golden Smaragd’ can be pruned to form a hedging, twice between May and September. The bottom of the hedge must be cut at least as wide as the top; in fact, possibly a little wider, so that the entire hedge receives enough light. Do you prefer a nice straight cut? Then tie a string across the top of the hedge as a guide. Don't prune too much as deep pruning is not well tolerated by these conifers.
Extra
This evergreen can grow to immense heights! This variety is actually a golden-yellow more than green but is called 'Golden cedar'. Very suitable as evergreen hedging of up to 3 metres high. Wind resistant and very hardy - a joy to behold.
