A touch of green in every room

When you think of plants; the garden, balcony, patio and living room often come to mind. However, when given a bit more thought this seems silly, because plants can go practically anywhere: from the bedroom to the bathroom, even on top of your toilet. We are here to show you how you can add a splash of green to every room in your home and the best plants to use in order to do so.

The Hall

The hall is typically the first room in your home that guests see. This space often contains only the bare necessities, such as a hat, coat, or shoe rack, but why not freshen the area up with a plant? You will receive a warm, green welcome every time you return home.

Do you have a large entrance hall, with several empty corners? The Dieffenbachia ‘Camille’ is an excellent plant to fill them with. Its vibrant shades of green will brighten the entire room. However, it is essential that the Dieffenbachia receives enough light. Do you have a smaller entrance hall, that doesn’t get much natural light? If so, we recommend the Chinese money plant. It looks fantastic when displayed front and centre on a stand. The biggest advantage of this plant is its ability to thrive in the shade, so it is perfect for a dark entrance hall!

The Living Room

This is where you spend most of your time, throughout the day, so it may very well be the most important room in the home. As such, it is important that the plants you choose really suit your taste. Are you the type to go big and green with the rugged Dracaena? Or would you prefer a delicate, decorative orchid for your window sill or dining table? Don’t ignore the less obvious areas either: you can hang plants from the ceiling or create a tiny jungle on your living room bookshelf. The sky’s the limit!

Tip! Do you keep your plant by the window, because it likes a bright location? Make sure that the window is at least 20 centimetres taller than the plant, in order to prevent the top from losing its leaves.

The Bedroom

Your bedroom is the space where relaxation is most important. Air-purifying plants are excellent choices for this room. They remove harmful substances from the air (which may cause headaches or sleeping problems) and break them down. These plants also regulate humidity to a certain extent by producing water vapour. Of the air-purifying plants, we highly recommend the Calathea ‘Insigne’. Adding one to your bedroom not only makes it a more appealing space, it also improves your quality of life.

The Bathroom

Plants in the bathroom have become popular in recent years and with good reason. Give your space a bit of leafy love by placing one on the window sill, or hanging one over the washbasin or bathtub! A rabbit’s foot fern is an excellent choice for this room.

We have a wide range of bathroom plants, all of which love the ample humidity that this space provides. The Sansevieria ‘Futura Superba’ is perfect for your window sill, not to mention very easy to maintain. It will greet you with its unique, green charm from the second you wake up to the moment you go to bed.

The Toilet

The toilet is probably the last place you’d expect to see plants, but that certainly does not mean they don’t belong there. To be honest, it is easy to forget to water plants in the toilet and the room often lacks the natural light that many plants need to thrive. The solution? An artificial plant! Bakker.com boasts a wide array of artificial plants that are perfect for transforming your toilet into a mini green oasis. For example, the Mica artificial spiderwort is perfect for hanging from the ceiling there. Is your toilet quiet roomy? Consider the Mica artificial begonia. This colourful plant is perfect for the window sill or near the washbasin.
Would you prefer some greenery that is actually alive? Cacti and succulents are excellent options. These are hardy plants that require little to no light.
