Planting
Plant your Rhododendron immediately upon receipt, in the garden or into a planter for on the patio. Just make sure the root ball is nice and moist prior to planting – soak in a bucket of lukewarm water for a while. Use a planter with sufficient drainage and layer the bottom with gravel or hydro-pellets. Add fresh potting compost and plant your rhododendron at the right depth. If planting in the garden, dig a wide enough hole and thoroughly loosen the soil with a fork. The top of the root ball should come to just below soil level once planted. Fill up with more soil and heel (or press into the pot) well in. Water immediately. Rhododendron will thrive in acidic, humus rich soils – improve your garden soil with the addition of peat. Clay soil will not be appreciated by your Rhododendron. Plant this Rhododendron in shade or part shade.
Rhododendron 'Cunningham's White' is now known to grow in a less acidic soil. This allows this lovely shrub to be planted in many more different places.

Care
A Rhododendron is a strong shrub that is very undemanding. You just need to ensure that the soil around the base of the plant doesn't dry out. Carefully snip off overblown flowers without damaging the new bud just below. When shoots get too long you can safely prune them away. Older shrubs can be thinned out by removing a few thicker stems and a rhododendron can be cut hard back to rejuvenate it but of course you will then loose flowers that year.
Extra
The much-loved rhododendron is a sturdy shrub that retains its foliage over the winter. The large flower clusters appear from May onwards with flowers in a lovely, bright shade of purple. The centre of each flower is a shade lighter with pretty markings. This rhododendron will become quite a large shrub in the garden. Potted, it will remain more compact. Looks lovely on its own, looks fabulous together with a Camelia.
Rhododendron is classified under Ericaceae (the heather family).
