Large red bunches
What a colour gradient! The panicle hydrangea 'Diamant Rouge' (Hydrangea paniculata) is always changing colour. The plant starts white and, as it blooms, it becomes deep red. They become large, full-flowering plumes. You can plant the hardy hydrangea all year round, provided temperatures have not dipped below freezing. The flowers bloom from summer to autumn.
Pruning is not necessary unless the bush becomes too large. In which case, prune off all the branches to the base. Plant the hydrangea in full sun or partial shade. Keep the soil moist. Remember to give extra water during dry periods. A striking image!

Planting
What do I need?
• Bucket
• Trowel
• Garden peat
Make sure that the root system of the panicle hydrangea stays moist. Place the bush in a bucket of lukewarm water before planting. Create a spacious hole for planting and till the soil well. Place the Hydrangea paniculata at the correct height in the planting hole. The top side of the root ball should be just below ground level. Fill the hole up with potting soil and press firmly. Water immediately after planting.
The panicle hydrangea grows best in very moist, humus-rich soil. Enrich the garden soil by adding compost. Give the bush a spot in full or half shade. Combining the panicle hydrangea with other plants The large flower panicles of the Hydrangea paniculata are truly a beautiful sight. This makes the shrub an exceptional choice for solo planting. This densely blooming hydrangea also looks stunning in a shrub border.
You can make a stunning combination with the American lilac (Ceanothus pallidaus ‘Marie Simon’). Filling a flower bed up entirely with this fantastic panicle hydrangea also creates a magical result.

What do I need?
• Watering can
• Plant food
• Cow manure
How do I care for the hydrangea?
Water the panicle hydrangea a bit more often when it gets dry. It does not enjoy dry soil. Pruning the panicle hydrangea Hydrangea paniculata blooms on one-year-old branches. For this reason, you can prune all the branches on the panicle hydrangea down to 40 cm above the ground every spring. This stimulates compact growth and dense blooming. Would you prefer a large bush? If so, then pruning is absolutely not necessary.
If you do not prune it, this bush can grow to 4 metres tall and 1.75 metres wide.

Extra
Did you know that the florets of a panicle hydrangea are actually just an umbel with flowers that keep growing out from the centre? If you look at it that way, they are clearly related to the bigleaf hydrangeas with ‘globe-shaped umbels’ and the ‘flat umbels’ of the Hydrangea macrophylla.
