Madagascar jasmine Deutzia 'Yuki Snowflake' pink - Hardy plant
Madagascar jasmine Deutzia 'Yuki Snowflake' pink - Hardy plant
Plant the plant in full sun or partial shade. The shrub prefers damp but well-drained soil. Give it extra water during dry periods.
If you buy deciduous shrubs in autumn they might not be looking quite as beautiful as usual. The big benefit of planting shrubs in autumn is that by spring they will be well rooted in the garden and ready to burst into growth.

Sturdy and strong, deutzia will thrive planted in the garden. Make sure that the deutzia root ball is drenched well prior to planting - soak overnight in a bucket of lukewarm water. Prepare a wide hole and thoroughly loosen the soil with a fork. Plant your deutzia at the correct depth - the top of the root ball should come to just below soil level. Fill the hole with soil, heel well in and water immediately. Deutzia will thrive in a fertile soil in full sun or partial shade.
Deutzia is a strong garden shrub that requires very little maintenance. Water extra in times of drought, especially in its first year of being planted and at the end of winter fork in some well-rotted manure around the base.
Deutzia is very hardy but do give some extra protection from frost if you have it in a planter. The pot will need to be moved to a more sheltered spot, out of the worst of the wind over the winter.
Pruning Deutzia
Deutzia flowers on year old wood. Prune back lightly after flowering in order to keep the bush compact. If you want to keep it really tight, cut all branches hard back every year after flowering is over.
You can rejuvenate the shrub every 5 years by cutting 1/3 of all the branches hard back -repeat this in subsequent years so that the entire plant is rejuvenated within just three years.
Without pruning, this shrub will reach 1.5 to 2.5 m high.
Deutzia is a small shrub that pruning helps to keep compact and it will flower abundantly too. This is why deutzia makes a great addition to a perennial border, or a shrubbery. Can look very pretty surrounding a topiary box - or along the edge of a path perhaps. Combines very well with the later flowering buddleja (butterfly bush). It should reach about 1 metre high after a while.
There are various cultivars available that primarily vary in the colour of the flower (pure white through dusky pink). The outside of the petals can also vary in those colours. There are also double flowered cultivars to be found.
