Planting
Make sure the root ball of the gooseberry is well-moistened prior to planting by soaking it in a bucket of lukewarm water. Prepare a suitable hole in well-drained, fertile soil. Plant the gooseberry bush at the correct depth in the hole. The top of the root ball should be just slightly below ground level. Fill the hole with soil, press firmly and water immediately after planting. Gooseberries grow well in a sunny area.
Care
Ribes uva-crispa is an easy fruit to grow, the bushes bear lots of fruit. During dry periods they need to be watered more often although very wet soil is not well-tolerated, especially in the winter. Fertilise moderately in early spring. Depending on the weather, the fruits ripen from late June onwards. Gooseberries need to be pruned The first year after planting, in February prune all the branches back by 3/4. In the 2nd year, prune 6-8 branches by 1/4. Every year onwards, regularly trim new branches by 1/3 and remove all old branches. It is also possible to train its branches in a fan shape against a wall or fence.
Extra
Ribes uva-crispa is a strong bush with thorny branches. The fruits of this gooseberry bush have a red and green skin which is not usually eaten, but you won't be able to resist its sweet, delicious pulp inside. It can be easily made into jams and syrups, peel and all.
This plant is suitable for small gardens and is self-pollinating.
