Planting
You can plant your Incarvillea delavayi in the spring in flower pots, window-boxes or directly into the garden. If you prefer to plant your Trumpet Flower in a pot, then use a large pot with drainage holes in the base. Cover the bottom with a layer of potsherds or hydro granules. Partially fill with fresh potting compost and lay the swollen Incarvillea delavayi rhizome at the correct depth (roughly 10 cm below the surface of the compost), spaced approximately 15 cm apart. Fill the pot with compost and press down firmly. Water your Gloxinia immediately after planting and place the pot in a sunny area. Line a porous pot with plastic or use a plastic inner pot. This prevents the evaporation of the water which will allow the compost to dry out less quickly. If you are planting your Gloxinia in the garden, space the root balls further apart. Improve poor garden soil by adding some fresh potting compost into the soil. Make sure you choose a spot with well-drained soil. A group of these plants looks great! Combining Trumpet flowers with other plants The refined looking flowers of the hardy gloxinia look really lovely in a flower pot, planter or window-box. You could also plant Incarvillea delavayi in a mixed flower border. Other plants that are also suitable to add to the border include the Columbine (Aquilegia Vulgaris 'Black Barlow') and the climber known as Bind plant (Calystegia Hederacea 'Flore Pleno').
Care
Water your hardy gloxinia regularly to prevent the soil from drying out, on the other hand waterlogged soil is not tolerated. You will encourage new flower growth if you regularly deadhead the faded Incarvillea delavayi flowers. We recommend regularly adding plant fertiliser when watering during the summer for an extra profuse show of flowers. This gloxinia is fairly hardy, but you can protect the plant with a layer of fallen leaves or pine tree branches. It is also possible to cultivate the plant as an annual. Potted hardy gloxinias are better overwintered indoors in a cool frost-free area.
Extra
Originally from China, the hardy gloxinia is also known as the Chinese Trumpet flower. The hardy gloxinia belongs to the Bignoniaceae family.
