Planting
As soon as possible after receiving the 'Queensland' tulip bulbs, they can be planted in the garden, a flower pot or a window-box. If not, the tulip bulbs must be kept in a frost-free area. Bulbs planted in a flower pot are not usually frost-resistant. Plant the bulbs in a hole that is three times as deep as the height of the bulbs. A 5 cm bulb for example should be planted in a 15 cm hole. The planting distance between 'Queensland' tulips is about 8 cm. Loosen the soil with a fork and plant the bulbs with the points facing upwards and the roots down. Refill the hole and avoid walking over the soil. Plant the tulips singly with a small trowel or with a special bulb planter. For larger groups, prepare a wider hole and plant more bulbs in it. The more bulbs planted the more lovely the effect. Plant tulips in groups of at least 6 bulbs or divide about 25-50 bulbs evenly over the border or flower bed.
Queensland' tulips in a pot
'Queensland' tulips grow well in pots or window-boxes. Make sure you use fresh potting compost and put a layer of gravel or hydro granules in the bottom. Place the bulbs in a hole that is 3 times as deep as the height of the bulbs. A 5 cm bulb should therefore be planted in a 15 cm hole. Planting distance between 'Queensland' tulips is about 6 cm. To protect the bulbs grown in a pot against frost, place the pot in a frost-free area or cover it with bubble wrap. Water during dry periods.
Care
'Queensland' tulip bulbs are at their best in the first year after planting. That’s why we recommend each year adding new and extra bulbs to make your borders and pots even more colourful. 'Queensland' tulips grow best in loose, well-drained soil in a shady spot or in full sun.
Extra
The 'Queensland' tulip has a very distinctive flower and brings a new look to the garden. This late flowering double tulip has lavish blooms on strong stems. The petals are ruffled and serrated, giving the appearance of white frosting. Colours range from salmon to deep pink. The profusion of petals means that these double tulips last longer than most other tulips and they grow to around 20 cm in height.
