The perfect hedge

Impenetrable protection! This evergreen hedge has got you covered! The special mix of five hedges consists of differently shaped leaves and various colours. We really enjoy this beautiful, diverse combination! The shrubs are evergreen and form a sturdy hedge. The mix contains the following species:1 Cherry laurel (Prunus laurocerasus)1 Wayfaring tree (Viburnum lantana)1 Korean privet (Ligustrum ovalifolium)1 Photinia (Photinia x fraseri 'Red Robin')1 Holly (Ilex aquifolium)This evergreen hedge is supplied as five branches of bare-root stock. The roots come fresh from the ground. They are already one to two years old. This gives them additional strength, enabling them to branch out faster than they would in a nursery pot. Plants grown from bare-root stock also adapt to their new environment more easily. They flower better and they are more economical. The hedge should be pruned twice per year. Once in the spring and once in the autumn. For the best results, give the hedge ‘beech and hedge’ food. The hedge will grow in any moist, well-drained soil. Make sure that the ground stays moist during the initial period after planting. It's best to give them extra water during dry periods. Sufficient light is needed to ensure good growth. The hedge grows best in full or half sun. It tolerates half shade well, too.

Planting

You can plant the evergreen hedge shrubs immediately after receiving them. Prepare a trench 60-80 cm deep. Improve the excavated soil with compost and manure. Soak the plants in water for one hour before planting. Divide the shrubs over the trench, about 5 plants per 4.5 meters. The hedge will be about one metre wide. The top of the root ball should be flush with ground level in the garden (please note that some land will collapse). Fill with soil, and give it lots of water so that it almost turns into a swamp.

Care

The evergreen hedge will require regular watering during the first year. Then it is only necessary to water in dry periods. In winter cover the ground under the hedge with a mulch of compost and garden fertiliser.

Evergreen hedges need to be pruned

These hedges should be pruned twice a year to keep their tight shape and prevent them from growing too wide. A good time to prune is from early to mid-June. After the 21st June (the longest day) trim the hedge preferably so that it's slightly tapered (wider on bottom), and work with the hedge trimmer from bottom to top. Do you prefer a straight cut? Tie a rope across the top of the hedge for guidance. Prune the hedge again for the winter.

Extra

This is an evergreen hedge - stays green throughout the entire year. You can shape your hedge tightly or give it a much looser shape.
