Decorative twist

This shrub can grow into a sturdy bush! The corkscrew hazel (Corylus avellana) has graceful twisting branches. That's what gives it its name! Place a bare branch in vase to decorate your living room. Long catkins grow on the hazel branches. They bloom beautifully in the winter.
Snip off branches in the spring. Place the plant in full sun. The hazel only needs water in dry periods.

Planting

This plant comes straight out of our garden to yours so plant it into your garden a.s.a.p upon receipt. Do soak the roots in a bucket of lukewarm water for about an hour before planting. Choose a spot where your hazel has room to grow - in a well drained soil, sandy and/or clay is best - and somewhere in full sun. Prepare a wide hole and loosen the soil thoroughly with a fork. Spread the roots of your hazel and plant at the right height in the hole - the top of the roots should be at least 10 cm under soil level. Fill the hole with soil, heel well in and water immediately. Corylus avellana (common hazel) will thrive in any moisture retaining soil. Add some well-rotted manure to improve poor soil.

Care

Common hazel will thrive in normal sandy to clay soil. Best spot is a sunny one for this little shrub. Only prune when you think it absolutely necessary. This shrub will reach about 4 m high over 10 years.
