          Attractive tufts
Remarkably long, cottony tufts. That's what gives common cottongrass (Eriophorum angustifolium) its name. The white tufts strike a beautiful contrast against the green, grass-like blades. We can plant the hardy common cottongrass all year round. The flower blooms in the spring.

Cottongrass is an indigenous riparian plant that will thrive actually in the pond. Plant Eriophorum angustifolium in a pond basket. Line the basket with a piece of jute and fill it with special pond medium with added peat. Plant the cottongrass in the basket and fill up with more pond medium. Wrap the remaining jute over and around, and add a layer of gravel or pebbles. Sink the basket 5-20 cm deep in your pond. If there is no shallow edge to your pond, stand the basket on a pile of bricks. Put the Eriophorum angustifolium in full sun.

Eriophorum angustifolium is an easy pond plant that requires little maintenance. Cut away the dead leaves in autumn and remove them from the pond.  If the clump grows too large, take the cottongrass out of the pond in May and divide the clump into smaller pieces. Replant only one piece (the best part).

Eriophorum angustifolium is an indigenous riparian plant that can still be found in marshlands around the country. The leaves are narrow and grass-like and the flowers are quite small and rather cute. After flowering the large white tufts of hair follow. These remain on the plant until August. Rather beautiful when planted in large groups or combined with other aquatics. Eriophorum angustifolium is commonly called cottongrass.
