Planting
Make sure the root ball of Chinese witch hazel is well watered by soaking it in a bucket of lukewarm water prior to planting. Prepare a large planting hole and loosen the soil thoroughly with a fork. Put the root ball of the Hamamelis at the right depth in the hole. The top of the root ball should be just slightly below the ground level. Refill the planting hole with soil and press firmly. Water immediately after planting. The Chinese witch hazel grows well in well-drained soil, rich in humus. Improve poor garden soil with compost. An ideal spot for this shrub is in full sun or partial shade. Hamamelis in the garden The Chinese witch hazel is particularly suitable as a solitary feature. To create an interesting look, place two different coloured witch hazels near each other, for example the yellow Hamamelis 'Boskoop' together with the red Hamamelis 'Diane'. But do remember that this shrub can become rather large with time. After ten years the height should reach about 3 m.
Care
Hamamelis 'Boskoop' is a strong shrub that requires little maintenance. Water well during dry periods, especially in its first year after planting. Pruning is not necessary. You can cut back long or crossing branches after flowering. In the winter a mulch layer of compost and granulated cow manure is appreciated by the Hamamelis.
Extra
Hamamelis 'Boskoop' bears sunny yellow, deliciously smelling flowers. The Chinese witch hazel stands out due to its early flowering and also for its wonderful autumnal colour. The small flowers often appear as early as December or January and consist of four linear shaped petals, which are quite long and often twisted. The pleasant scent of the flowers is very strong and a Chinese witch hazel will give your garden a lovely perfume!
