Calycanthus chinensis 'Venus'
White Eastern Sweetshrub
The Calycanthus 'Venus', or Eastern Sweetshrub, is a hardy shrub with particularly beautiful white flowers. They look just like a Magnolia flowers. In autumn the 'Venus' also has a high ornamental value. The large leaves have a warm, golden yellow colour. The hardy Calycanthus blooms twice a year. First in spring and then again in summer.
Put the Calycanthus in full sun or partial shade. Give it extra water during dry periods.
If you buy deciduous shrubs in autumn they might not be looking quite as beautiful as usual. The big benefit of planting shrubs in autumn is that by spring they will be well rooted in the garden and ready to burst into growth.

Maintenance
A Calycanthus does not require much care. Give the shrub water during dry periods, so that the roots do not dry out.
Pruning
You do not need to prune the Calycanthus, but you can. In any case, do not prune any flowers that have bloomed, because these will later turn into small fruits between the branches of the Calycanthus. In the spring, you can trim away old or damaged branches to keep the shrub looking tidy.
What do I need?
- Pruning shears

Water first
First, place the Calycanthus in a bucket of lukewarm water. Add garden peat and compost to a large pot and then plant. First place the shrub in shade, and move it to an area in the sun for an hour longer each day, so that it can adapt.
In the garden
Calycanthus love sun or half shade and nutrient-rich soil. Dig a planting hole and till the soil a bit, so that the roots can take hold quickly. Set the root ball at the proper height, so that the top is just below ground level. Fill the hole up with soil, garden peat and compost, and press firmly. Water the shrub right away.
