Planting
What do I need?
  • Shovel
  • Bucket
  • Watering can or garden hose

Make sure that the root ball of the Buddleja is sufficiently damp. Place the shrub in a bucket of water for 15 minutes before planting. Create a spacious hole for planting and till the soil well. Place the root ball of the butterfly bush in the planting hole. The top side of the root ball should be just below ground level. Fill the hole up with soil and press firmly. Water immediately after planting.

The butterfly bush will grow in all well-drained soil types and does best in full sun. Combine the butterfly bush with bluebeard and summersweet for a true butterfly garden.
Care
What do I need?
  • Pruning shears
  • Cow manure pellets
  • Watering can or garden hose

Has your butterfly bush grown too large? Clip off all the branches between 30-40 cm. The plant blooms on year-old branches, so this won’t impact flowering. Prune the dead branches off in the spring. Insulate the bottom-most metre of the butterfly bush during harsh winters.

In the spring and summer, sprinkle cow manure pellets around the shrub. Water the pellets right away.
