The plant is not winter hardy. Bring the plant indoors in autumn. The plant can overwinter in a light, frost-free place (5-15 degrees). Planting
Bougainvillea is a tub plant that looks fabulous as it grows and flourishes in a large pot or planter. Choose one with holes in the base. If it is porous (clay) line with plastic or insert a pot liner. This prevents evaporation of water from the soil and will stop the Bougainvillea from drying out too quickly. Cover the bottom with a layer of broken pot or gravel. Put nutritious potting soil in the pot or planter and plant the root ball of the Bougainvillea at the correct depth. Fill the pot with soil, press firmly and water immediately after planting. Place the pot in a sheltered area with complete sunshine. The flexible branches of the Bougainvillea will need some support, so be sure to place a small trellis or canes in the pot. Tie the branches to the support as and when they develop.
Care
Bougainvillea's soil should always remain fairly damp. Make sure there is adequate drainage as good drainage is essential. The irrigation water needs to be able to drain away. Add plant food with the irrigation water on a regular basis from spring until August. Spray the whole plant in warm, dry periods with a plant spray. In early spring prune the Bourganvillea by shortening the main stems by a third. Bougainvillea should be protected during the winter Bougainvillea is not a hardy plant, but it must be protected through the winter. Before the first frost, place the pot in a cool, bright room (5-10° C). Keep the soil just moist until March, you can then put your Bougainvillea out during warmer days (16-20 ° C) and give it some more water. Repot your Bougainvillea in a larger pot if necessary, always use fresh potting soil when doing so. Water it more often. At last, your Bougainvillea is ready to be placed back outside on your patio and show off its tropical appearance. Give it plenty of water and food once again. Do keep an eye on any sign of night frosts. In addition, beware of any sign of night frosts.
Extra
The climbing Bougainvillea is one of the most famous subtropical climbers. You can find this beautiful rich-flowering tub plant in various countries surrounding the Mediterranean Sea. The pink/purple flowers of the Bougainvillea are actually bracts. Its real flowers are white and can be seen if you look between the petals.
