Pink evening primrose in the garden
Oenothera speciosa ‘Rosea’ is laden with flowers from June until the autumn. The stems lay partly on the soil, so the pink evening rose is an excellent ground cover plant. Because of the compact growth and profuse flowering, Oenothera speciosa ‘Rosea’ is a good choice for along a path. Or fill a bed surrounded with box hedging with this charming summer flower. Also wonderful in a spacious planter on the patio. Try combining pink evening primrose with baby’s breath (Gypsophila paniculata).
Pink evening primrose is an easy and very abundantly flowering perennial. Needs watering regularly so that the soil around the roots does not dry out. However, soil that is too wet is not tolerated (especially in the winter). During the flowering period add a regular mix of plant food in the watering can. Completely cut away dead flower stems to encourage and extend the flowering period. Flowering will continue throughout the summer. In winter the plants die back, so cover the plants with a layer of leaf litter for protection. In the spring cut back all withered foliage and soon new shoots will appear.
Pink evening primrose is a profusely flowering plant with cup-shaped, pink flowers which fade quickly but every day are replaced with new ones. In the evening even more flowers open making them attractive to moths. The scent of the flowers becomes even stronger at dusk. The most common species of evening primroses normally have yellow flowers.
