Planting
The Lilium orientalis bulbs can be planted in spring or autumn. Choose a place in full sun or part shade. Prepare a large planting hole and place the bulbs with the points facing upwards, 12-15 cm deep. Plant the flower bulbs 15 cm apart from each other. Water generously after planting. The Oriental lily prefers to grow in loose, humus-rich soil. The soil can be improved by adding some compost and granulated cow manure. The bulbs of the Oriental lily can remain in the same place for years. Oriental lily in a pot Thanks to their firm flower stems these lilies also grow well in flower pots and planters. You can fill a whole flower pot with these magnificent lilies, place the bulbs about 10 cm apart from each other. Or make a special combination by planting a few lily bulbs together with the aster (Callistephus) which has a much lower growing habit.
Care
During the flowering period of the Oriental lily regularly add plant food when watering. Lilies can suffer from the lily beetle which is bright red in colour, the grubs are yellow. To prevent them from eating the leaves and other arterial parts of the lily, remove the beetles, eggs or grubs and destroy them. During winter, cover the lily bulbs with a layer of leaves to protect them from severe frost. Lilies grown in pots can be overwintered in a frost-free area. Repot every two years. Plant Lily in the right spot Oriental lilies love to face the sun, but it is important to keep their ‘feet’ cool. For this to be achieved, plant low growing plants around the lilies to protect the soil. Don't place your pot of lilies in complete sunshine! Choose a sheltered spot with sufficient day time sun.
Extra
This mix of lilies (Lilium orientalis) consists of new double-flowered Oriental Lilies. The flowers range from light and dark pink to white. The flowers have a few dark speckles in the heart. Did you know the lily is the symbol of peace? There are many species of Lilium, in various shapes and colours. Lilies make very good cut flowers, the delicious scent of the flowers fills the room in seconds. Definitely plant a group of lilies in your garden.
To avoid pollen stains you could nip the stamens out before arranging, but best is just to avoid touching them as removing them can rather spoil the look of the flower.
