Planting
Checker Mallow grows best in the garden. Improve poor garden soil by mixing in some compost and fertiliser pellets. Plant the Checker Mallow at the appropriate depth in the hole - he top of the root ball should be just slightly below ground level. Fill the hole with soil and heel well in. Water immediately after planting. Checker Mallow/Oregon checkerbloom (Sidalcea oregana 'Party Girl') will thrive in a sunny spot and in well-drained (sandy), nutritious soil.
Sidalcea oregana 'Party Girl' in the border
The strikingly coloured flowers of Sidalcea oregana 'Party Girl' are wonderful for the border. This profuse bloomer can be combined well with lupins (Lupinus), coneflower (Echinacea) 'Butterfly Hybrids' and roses. For an exuberant effect, plant the Oregon checkerbloom in large groups.
Care
Checker Mallow is easy to grow and requires little maintenance. This perennial can remain in the same spot for several years. Be sure to prevent the soil around the roots from drying out since the Checker Mallow/Oregon checkerbloom doesn't like very dry soil. Cut off its faded flower stems after the first bloom to stimulate good growth. The flowering will continue throughout the entire summer. The stems above the ground experience a winter dieback. Cover the plant with a layer of leaf litter in winter. Cut off all of remaining stems in spring and you will soon see new shoots appear.
Extra
The delicate, finely-shaped flowers of Checker Mallow bloom on solid stems and stand proud above the leaves. They look like miniature hollyhocks. Checker Mallow is a wonderful variety with dark pink flowers and is a very profusely flowering plant!! Checker Mallow is also beautiful in a bouquet. The flowers last a long time in a vase. Pick the flowers preferably early in the morning. Remove the bottom leaves and place the stems directly into a vase full of lukewarm water with cut flower feed.
