Bees cannot resist them. Fresh from the garden.

Where should we begin? The Cornflower (Centaurea) has a very special look. It has colourful antennae that shoot out from its long stems. They shoot out from its globe-shaped centre. Some of them just hang there. It is the perfect plant for bees. You will receive the cornflowers as bare-root stock in sugar cane sacking. This is more environmentally friendly than plastic nursery pots. The roots are shipped fresh from the ground. They are already one year old. This gives them additional strength, enabling them to grow faster than they would in a nursery pot. Plants grown from bare-root stock also adapt to their new environment more easily. They flower better and they are more economical. Bare-root stock plants grow when it becomes warmer. They are winter-hardy perennials. They can be planted at any time, provided that the ground is not frozen. The cornflower does best in a spot with full sun. It can also be planted in flower pots on a patio, roof terrace or balcony. Or just plant them separately around the garden. Always keep the soil around the roots damp. But it should never be soaking wet.

Planting

You can plant the Cornflower in the ground immediately after receiving it. Prepare a suitable hole in loose, nutritious soil. Improve poor garden soil by mixing in some compost and granulated cow manure. Plant the Cornflower at the appropriate depth in the hole. The top of the root ball should be just slightly below ground level. Fill the hole with soil, press firmly and water immediately after planting. The Cornflower grows best in a sunny area.

Care

The Cornflower is an easy-to-grow perennial that requires minimal maintenance. Be sure to prevent the soil around its roots from drying out. Blooms right through June to August, particularly if deadheaded and not allowed to go to seed. Its stems above the ground will die back in winter. During winter, cover this plant with a layer of fallen leaves. Wet soil is poorly tolerated during the winter. In spring, cut off all of its leaves as soon there will be some new shoots growing above the ground.

Extra

The impressive Cornflower (Centaurea) is a lesser known plant that has beautifully incised leaves with silvery hairs. As its flowers attract bees, this plant is perfect for a natural garden.
