Planting
These blue grape hyacinth bulbs (Pseudomuscari azureum) should be planted a.s.a.p upon receipt in the garden, or in pots and window-boxes. Keep bulbs frost-free until planted. Plant the bulbs in a hole three times deeper than the size of the bulb - so, a 5 cm bulb goes in a 15 cm deep hole. Grape hyacinth bulbs should be planted 5 cm apart. Loosen the soil with a fork and plant the bulb point upwards. Fill the hole with soil and try not to walk over the area where you have just planted. The more you plant, the better the effect of the grape hyacinths when in flower. Plant in groups of at least 25 bulbs, or scatter about 50 bulbs evenly over a bed, border or rockery. Blue grape hyacinths in pots Blue Grape Hyacinth bulbs (Pseudomuscari azureum) will also thrive in pots or planters on the patio or decking. Layer the bottom of a pot with hydro-pellets and use fresh compost to fill the pot. You could achieve a nice colourful mix with some forget-me-not bulbs in amongst the grape hyacinth bulbs.
Potted bulbs do require frost protection so store the pot somewhere frost-free, or wrap the pot entirely in bubble wrap. Water extra in dry periods.
Care
Each Pseudomuscari, or Muscari variety is a small, bulbous plant that is great for naturalising. The bulbs can remain in the same spot for years. Bakker advises feeding the bulbs immediately after flowering with Bakker Bulb Fertiliser to keep them growing well. This will give you abundant flowering the following year. Only cut back once the leaves have all turned yellow. If growing in the lawn, put off your first mowing until the leaves have turned yellow. By caring for them in this manner you will be rewarded next year with even more flowers. If you wish to replant the bulbs, do this immediately after flowering. Water extra in dry periods.
These bulbs will of course also thrive in pots on the patio or decking. Ensure good drainage (and frost-free storage over the winter) and they will all survive in the pot for many years.
Keeping psuedomuscari azureum over the winter This little bulb is perfectly hardy but of course potted bulbs are more sensitive to frost. Do protect your potted bulbs by moving the pot to a frost-free area - or try covering the whole pot in bubble wrap.
Extra
This is a really unusual blue grape hyacinth. The bright blue flowers are really quite unique in the flower world.
This grape hyacinth has been classified Pseudomuscari because of the more open flowers, which is different again from the 'real' grape hyacinth called just Muscari.
This is a very striking variety that you won't find very often - such a shame really as it's a wonderful variety! What is really exceptional about this little grape hyacinth is that the flowers are such a unique shade of blue. You will also be amazed at just how early they flower and how pretty such a small flower can actually be. These are perfect for allowing to naturalise too!
Pseudomuscari is classified under Asparagaceae, just as Muscari is.
