Planting
When you receive the Colchicum ‘The Giant' corms, they can be placed on the window sill and will flower naturally without needing any compost. After they have flowered they can be planted in the garden, a flower pot or in a planter. Plant the corms in a planting hole that is three times as deep as the height of the corm. Therefore a corm of 5 cm should be planted in a 15 cm deep hole. The planting distance of Autumn Meadow Saffron is about 10 cm. Loosen the soil and plant the corms with the pointed side upwards. Refill the planting hole and water immediately. Colchicum ‘The Giant’ grows best in nutritious soil that is not too dry in a spot in full sun or partial shade. Colchicum in the garden Colchicum ‘The Giant’ can grow almost anywhere in the garden. In the autumn, a large group of Autumn Meadow Saffron will look amazing. Plant the corms in the border, in the rock garden or under the bushes. These corms also look great on the lawn, but you can only mow in the spring when the leaves have turned yellow. Colchicum also grows well in a pot and will create an attractive display on your patio or decking! Make sure you use fresh potting soil and a pot that has adequate drainage.
Care
The corms of the Autumn Meadow Saffron can remain in the same spot for years and are ideal for naturalizing between deciduous shrubs. The plants will become increasingly beautiful with each year. Colchicum is an easy-to-grow plant that demands little care.
Extra
Colchicum ‘The Giant’ is one of the easiest autumn flowering bulbs to grow in the garden. The large deep pink-lilac and white flowers remind us of crocuses. Did you know that you can easily distinguish the Colchicum from the crocus? Colchicum has 6 stamens whilst the crocus only has 3. The flowering period of Colchicum ‘The Giant’ is during the autumn and in the spring only its long, shiny leaves appear. You can also use the Colchicum as a 'dry flowerer'. The corms can be simply be placed on a light, warm window-sill (without compost) and the flowers will soon appear. It can be returned to the garden immediately after flowering. The entire plant is toxic.
