If you want to use Pelargonium zonale as a potted plant, it would be best to use a sufficiently large flower pot with holes in the base. Cover the base with pot shards or a layer of gravel, so that surplus water is able to drain away easily. Use fresh potting compost and place the root ball of the upright geranium at the correct depth. You should preferably use special Pelargonium compost. Add soil and press down firmly. Water immediately after planting and place the flower pot in a location with full sun or partial shade.
This upright geranium will also do really well as a bedding plant in open ground. If you want to improve the garden soil, you can mix in a little potting compost. Do watch out for late frost, because Pelargonium zonale is not able to resist frost very well.
Pelargonium zonale is an upright geranium which can withstand drought. Bakker recommends adding plant nutrition for flowering plants to the water regularly in summer. In this way you can be sure of a rich bloom. Regularly deadhead faded flowers, so that the plant will produce even more flower buds.
Pelargoniums are not winter-hardy, but you can keep them through winter in a frost-free location. Repot the upright geranium in spring and prune it back hard.
The climbing geranium!
Of course, these geraniums do not really climb, but they grow so high that they do need some climbing support. This will be beneficial for its climbing appearance. You can also place the geranium against a fence or trellis. Bind it at regular positions and remove spent flowers for an even better bloom!
The very striking flowers of our well-known Pelargonium zonale are in beautiful colours, white, pink and red. This colour combination is very expressive and will combine perfectly with other white, pink and red flowers in the garden. The flower clusters are born by sturdy, thick stems. The upright geranium Pelargonium zonale is very strong and flowers early.
