Choose a sunny spot outside and plant your calla lilies in humus rich, well-drained soil. You can improve poor soil by mixing in some compost. The roots should be set at about 10 cm deep. Zantedeschia grows well in fairly moist soil. Always use fresh potting compost if planting in pots or window-boxes.
Combining calla lilies with other plants
If you have a fairly moist corner in the garden, the Zantedeschia rehmanni looks lovely combined with the heart lily (Hosta). Especially if you choose a hosta with blue-green leaves which will contrast beautifully with the white coloured flowers of the calla. Calla lilies in different colours planted together also look great in a large planter.
Throughout the summer, water this wonderful Calla Lily ‘Rehmanni' so that the soil remains constantly moist. For a rich flowering, we recommend adding plant food when watering. If you are growing the Calla Lilies in a pot place a saucer under the pot and always leave a layer of water during the dry periods. Do not use fertiliser after the flowering period.
Preserve Calla Lily during the winter
Calla Lily ‘Rehmanni' does not tolerate frost. Therefore, we recommend keeping them in a pot over the winter. In winter water sparingly, do not let the soil dry out. In early spring as the weather gets warmer, you can water your Calla Lilies more often and place them back outside. Bring the plant indoors when there are any signs of night frost.
Did you know that the calla lilies are mainly grown for their showy spathes? The vase-shaped pink coloured 'flower' is not actually a flower at all. The real flowers are tiny and grow on the little, pale yellow spadix, which is almost completely surrounded by the leaf-like graceful spathe. As its wonderful spathes last so long, calla lilies are very popular as cut flowers. The Calla Lily is also called Zantedeschia.
