Planting
Plant your blue grape hyacinths (Muscari) as soon as possible upon receipt, in the garden or into pots or window boxes. Do store frost free if not planting right away. Plant in a hole 3 times deeper than the size of the bulb so, a 5 cm bulb goes in a 15 cm hole. Blue grape hyacinths should be planted 4 cm apart. Fork the soil well loose and plant the bulb point upwards. Fill the hole and try not to walk over where you've planted your bulbs. The more you plant, the better the effect. Groups of at least 25 look good, or try dividing up to 50 of them evenly over a border or bedding. Blue grape hyacinths in pots Blue grape hyacinth (Muscari) will thrive in pots and window boxes too. Layer the base of your planter with gravel or hydro-pellets and do use fresh potting compost. Blue grape hyacinths go great with forget-me-nots. Try it!
Potted bulbs need protected from frost so either store them frost free or pack them in with bubble wrap. Water them when dry.
Care
All Muscari are great little bulbs that are suitable for naturalising. They can stay planted where they are for years on end too. Bakker advises fertilising the bulbs with Bakker's bulb fertiliser after flowering is over. This will ensure abundant flowering next year. Also, don't cut the leaves back before they've turned yellow. If they're growing through the lawn, only trim the grass there when the leaves have turned. With all this good care, your blue grape hyacinths will return year upon year in the spring. Moving to a new spot should only be done after flowering too.
Extra
Blue grape hyacinth (Muscari) is really rather special because of the shade of blue being rather unique in the world of plants!
There are many muscari cultivars - some varieties have a very striking single shiny leaf! Other varieties look very different to the ones we know and love. There are even double flowers available and there are white, pink and even yellow ones out there!
What's so special about blue grape hyacinths is, they grow fuller and more pretty every year they are planted. You will continually be amazed at quite how pretty such a little flower can be. And they're perfect for allowing to naturalise!
Muscari is classified under Asparagaceae.
