Acer campestre
When planted as a hedge, this maple variety has a tendency to become very broad. This is a wonderful sight in a large garden, of course, but if your garden is not very big your hedge maple will need frequent and rigorous pruning.
Pruning in winter
As the hedge maple is very hardy, it can be pruned in winter without any problem, although this should not be done in freezing weather.
Pruning hedge maple in May - June
As already mentioned, the hedge maple grows very rapidly. It can be pruned again in late May or early June.
September pruning
If you wish, you can prune your hedge maple a third time in autumn, especially if you want a neat, trim hedge. The best time to do this is in the second half of September.
