Plants and crops consist mainly of water. Water flows from the roots to the leaves, transporting the nutrients absorbed by the roots to the place where they are needed. It is therefore essential for a plant to have enough water. Plants make their own growth hormones from inorganic substances, and the roots and leaves play a leading role in this. Roots absorb water containing salts from the soil, and leaves absorb carbon dioxide from the air. These substances are used for the composition of the essential organic material.
Water requirements
The amount of water needed by a plant differs considerably depending on the type of plant and its stage of growth. Always bear in mind that too much water can cause just as much damage as too little water! Soil that is too wet encourages disease and mould, and if the soil is saturated this can also cause suffocation. In addition, you will have very expensive water bills, which is another good reason to use water sparingly!
Watering plants
When we plant shrubs, conifers and trees, we pour water into the planting hole. This water is intended to stimulate the growth of the roots. Damp roots form new capillary roots, whereas dry roots do not. The plant is consequently unable to absorb sufficient water, and this will ultimately lead to dehydration.
Sprinkling
Water droplets act like a magnifying glass and this can cause burns on grass, leaves and petals. Furthermore, most water evaporates immediately in the afternoon, which is another reason for not sprinkling at this time. The best time to sprinkle the lawn is early morning or late afternoon.
It is also better to sprinkle for a long time twice a week rather than every day for a few minutes. If you sprinkle for a short time the water barely penetrates the soil and fails to reach the roots.

Pay attention to quality when buying a hose, as poor quality hoses will soon develop kinks and cracks. Garden hoses that have been strengthened with nylon thread or PVC are recommended.
