Garden plan

Before planting a garden, it's helpful to first draw up a plan of what you are going to plant where. It's good to know how much space you have and how you want to fill it, or if you want to cover it with a lawn. Then choose the distribution of plants, trees and/or flowers with flower bulbs. This is known as a garden plan. A garden plan helps with purchasing everything you need for your garden. Would you like to see an example of a garden plan? Read the garden plan article. Planting trees, shrubs and perennials

Trees, shrubs and perennials are at the heart of your garden. They are there for multiple years and with their lovely colours and shapes they form a dominant part of your garden. So select your favourite trees, shrubs and perennials and place them in important places in the garden. Because more and more trees, shrubs and perennials are grown in pots, they can be planted all year round. When planting, be sure that the ground is not frozen because this would kill the roots. Plants that are grown in open ground can be harvested during the dormant period and can be planted between October and March. This applies especially to large trees and hedges.

Follow these steps when planting trees, shrubs and perennials:

  1. Dig a hole in the place for the plant that is larger than the root ball. It is important to loosen the soil at the bottom of the hole.
  2. Fill the hole partially with new potting soil to add nutrients to the soil.
  3. Put the root ball in the hole with the top just below the surface. Note: If the root ball is above the soil surface, it can dry out.
  4. Firmly press the soil down around the roots so the roots make contact with the soil.
  5. Give the plant plenty of water. This is important for multiple reasons. Firstly, the water eliminates the air in the soil around the roots. Secondly, the plant will really need a drink after its travels.

Flower bulbs add colour to your garden

When (re)arranging your garden, it is important to consider the bulbs that are already in the ground. Of course, you will have already planned the flower bulbs that bloom in the spring back in the autumn. You will of course want even more colour in the summer, in addition to these spring bloomers and the trees, shrubs and perennials in the garden. Fill the spaces in your borders with summer-flowering bulbs. Are your borders already full? Then you can always plant flower bulbs in pots. At Bakker.com, you'll find flower bulb packages for your border and for flower pots. That way, you can create lovely colour in your garden this summer.
