Charming ball

Pretty as a picture! The trumpet flower 'Indian Summer' (Campsis radicans) is cultivated on the stem. That way, we can enjoy a green sphere of flowers, just like a little tree. The trumpet flower has calyxes that are coloured orange-red. They bloom all summer long.
The trumpet flower looks great in a pot on the patio or balcony. Can also be planted in the garden. The Campsis is not winter-hardy. Position the plant in a sunny spot. The trumpet flower prefers well-drained soil. Keep the soil slightly moist at all times, however, the plant can also handle being dry for a short period.

Planting
First place the shrub in a bucket with lukewarm water, so that the root ball of the trumpet flower gets really moist. Make a sufficiently large planting hole and thoroughly loosen the soil. Place the root ball of Campsis radicans 'Indian Summer'® at the correct height in the planting hole. The top of the root ball should be just below ground level. Fill the planting hole with soil and press down firmly. Water your trumpet flower immediately after planting. The trumpet flower will grow well in fertile soil, improve garden soil with compost and garden manure. Give this climber a warm and sheltered spot in full sun. Trumpet flower as a creeper By far, most the most cultivars of Campsis are beautiful creepers, but Campsis radicans 'Indian Summer'® on a stem cannot be used as a creeper as it has been grafted on a stem. If you want it to creep you should choose a different variety, such as Campsis tagliabuana 'Madame Galen'.
Care
The trumpet flower Campsis radicans 'Indian Summer'® requires sufficient moisture in order to develop well. Therefore, water extra during dry periods. Protect the base of the trumpet flower against severe frost with a layer of fallen leaves or straw. In early spring, add a mulch layer of compost and garden fertiliser. Pruning the trumpet flower or creeper on stem Strongly prune back the stems between late March and early April, to just above the graft location. Here, you should leave at least 3 buds per stem, in order for the plant to produce new stems that will flower in summer. If you do not prune, the plant will become messy, as the shoots will return to their natural behaviour. They will start to creep...
Extra
This exotic, richly blooming plant steals the show in late summer with large orange-red flowers. In a warm spot, this plant will flower well into the depths of autumn. The leaves are up to 45 cm long and divided into smaller leaflets.
