Planting+

The spider plants are delivered in a standard nursery pot. You can repot the plants into a larger pot, but be sure to use soil rich in humus. Simply placing the plant in a more attractive outer pot is also possible. If you’d prefer not to do that, a planting dish is very practical: the water can remain in the dish temporarily. Only add new water once all of it has been absorbed or has evaporated. The dish must be dry between waterings. Keep the potting soil moist to ensure continuous growth of the plant.

Give Chlorophytum a warm location (18-25°C) where it preferably does not receive direct sunlight and never drops below 10°C. It can handle lower temperatures (up to 2°C), but it will stop growing entirely. In cooler environments, the plant requires less water.

Care+

Even though the spider plant (Chlorophytum) is a true savannah plant and receives direct sunlight in the wild, it is actually more practical not to put it in full sun. The more sun it gets, the more water the plant needs. This plant responds well to fertiliser by growing very quickly.

During the winter, the plant can be kept in a somewhat drier location. Only give it water and indoor plant fertiliser again when spring arrives. The plant will reward you with white-flowered stems. However, these are small and not particularly decorative. New plants may also grow from these shoots.

Extra+

The spider plant (Chlorophytum) is a (sub)tropical plant native to the South African savannah. It starts growing the second it gets wet. When dry season arrives, the leaves above ground die off and the plant survives by forming a tuber. A rainstorm is more than enough to get the leaves growing again. However, the spider plant does not need to be watered throughout the year in order for it to grow and develop.

The latest research has categorised the Chlorophytum as part of the Asparagaceae family of plants (asparagus).
