Pink pussy willow

The hardy willow with pink catkins like you've never seen it before. Willow Salix 'Mount Aso' grows fast and blooms with pink-red catkins. This willow is also perfect for your patio and decking because it only grows up to 1.8 metres tall.
Its flowering period is between February and March. After it has bloomed you can prune away the dead flowers. Old branches can also be pruned.
Place it in a spot in the shade or partial shade.
Did you know? This type of willow is named after the largest active volcano in Japan: Mount Aso. Probably because of its explosion of colourful catkins.

Planting
What do I need?
  • Garden spade
  • Bucket
  • Watering can or garden hose
  • Flower pot
  • Potting soil

Make sure that the root ball of the Salix is thoroughly damp. To guarantee this, place the decorative shrub in a bucket of water for 15 minutes before planting. Create a spacious hole for planting and till the soil well. Place the root ball into the planting hole. The top side of the root ball should be just below ground level. Fill the hole up with potting soil and press firmly. Water immediately after planting.

 Potted plant

Plant the Salix in a beautiful decorative pot! Fill the pot with potting soil and place the dappled willow inside with the root ball just below the edge. Press down a bit and water. Be sure that any excess water can drain out of the pot.
Care
What do I need?
  • Fiskars® Pro Bypass pruning shears
  • Bakker® Koemest-Plus grains
  • Watering can or Gardena® spiral hose set

Prune the dappled willow back by about 10-15 cm every spring. This will ensure that the Salix produces fresh pink leaves each year. Prune the dead branches  in the spring. During the spring and summer, sprinkle cow manure pellets around the shrub. Moisten the pellets right away.

Potted plant

If the Salix is in a decorative pot, you should also give it some cow manure pellets regularly and water them immediately afterwards. Be sure to prune it each year in the spring so that new, fresh shoots will grow.
Extra
The Salix is native to Japan and Korea. It was discovered in 1979 by the famous Dutch botanist, Harry van de Laar (1929-1999), who also gave his name to the botanical garden in Boskoop.
