Planting
Plant your Ophiopogon planiscapus immediately upon receipt in the garden, or in pots or planters for patio or decking. Prepare a large hole and work the soil loose with a fork. Improve poor garden soil by mixing in some garden compost. Plant your Mondo grass at the correct depth - the top of the root ball should come to just below soil level. Fill the hole with soil and heel (press in a pot) well in. Water immediately. Ophiopogon planiscapus will thrive in full sun or part shade in a loose, humus rich soil.
Potted Ophiopogon planiscapus
When keeping your mondo grass potted, do use a pot with holes in the base. cover the base with potsherds or a layer of hydro-pellets. Add some fresh potting compost and plant your Ophiopogon planiscapus at the correct depth in the pot. Fill the pot up with more potting compost and press firmly in. Water generously immediately and stand the pot in a sunny spot or partly shaded spot. A terracotta (porous) pot is best lined in plastic prior to planting, or use a plastic pot inside a larger planter. This helps prevent evaporation and the plant will not dry out so quickly.
Care
Ophiopogon planiscapus is an evergreen perennial that doesn't die back and is easy to grow. Water regularly to prevent the soil around the roots from drying out. Waterlogged soil is not tolerated especially in winter. Mondo grass (Ophiopogon planiscapus) is definitely hardy. Cut back any spoiled foliage in the spring and you will soon see new leaves appear.
Extra
This hardy perennial with gras- like foliage is green throughout the year. Makes a great ground cover plant, giving weeds less chance to flourish. Will flower in the summer followed by shiny, round berries that quickly turn cobalt blue - not a shade you will often see in nature!
Ophiopogon planiscapus is related to lily of the valley and is also called Mondo grass or lilyturf.
