Planting+

'Stuttgarter Riesen' can be planted from early spring to late spring, preferably in rows at a distance of 8 cm, with approximately 30 cm between each row. Plant the onions just below the surface. If the weather is wet it is best to leave until later. Shallots grow best under complete sunshine.

Planting method

To be planted in the garden - End February up to June.
Plant in the garden, preferably in a sunny spot, from the end of February all the way in to June. Loosen the soil with a fork to at least 30 cm. Draw a straight row roughly 4 cm deep. Label the row for future reference and plant your onion sets at 10 cm intervals. Cover with 3 cm soil and press carefully down. Sprinkle with water. Extra rows should be 30 cm apart.

Care+

Onion ‘Stuttgarter Riesen’ is an easy-to-grow vegetable and is ideal for any new gardener. Work some garden fertiliser into the ground preferably in the winter; about 50 grams per square metre. Sprinkle 40 grams of potassium per square meter. Make sure that after planting you keep the area free from weeds. Provide extra water during dry periods so that the onions develop well. In very wet summers, you can harvest a few weeks earlier.

Harvesting onions

From mid-July, you can start harvesting Allium cepa 'Stuttgarter Riesen'. When about half the foliage has turned brown, the onions can be lifted from the soil. Hang them in bunches to dry. Onions can be stored for a long time in a cool and dry place.

Extra+

Onion 'Stuttgarter Riesen' (Allium cepa) is a large, deep yellow onion with firm, white flesh. It is an old breed that even our grandparents are familiar with. It is ideal for storage! Be sure to have some parsley, chamomile and marigold nearby to keep onion flies away from the plant. Onions are very healthy and contain high levels of calcium, phosphorus and vitamin C. Onion sets should have a rotation cycle when planted at home as root crops.
