You will receive the hollyhocks bare-rooted in environmentally friendly sugar cane sacking. The roots are shipped fresh from the ground. They are already one year old. Bare-root stock plants grow when it becomes warmer. These are winter-hardy perennials, so they return every year. The flowers bloom in the summer.
Hollyhocks are real sun worshippers. They should be planted in full sun. The soil should be kept slightly damp. It's best to give them extra water during dry periods.

Planting
Hollyhock Alcea rosea is a real sun worshipper! A spot close to a sunny south facing wall or fence is ideal for this romantic, summer flowering plant. Well-drained, sandy soil will be perfect. Don’t forget to fertilise and don’t let the plants dry out. Recommended spacing for the young plants is approx. 50 cm apart. Hollyhocks and climbing roses Hollyhocks combine very well with other plants. Climbing roses grown alongside hollyhocks make a great partnership. Both varieties have the same requirements and blend together perfectly. Lavender in the vicinity also works well.
Care
The plants you receive from us will flower during the same year. The hollyhock is usually grown as a biennial which means that the plant dies after flowering. When the plant turns to a brownish colour in autumn, you can cut down the whole plant. Self seeding hollyhocks The seed pods are very decorative, leave them to ripen on the plant and they will easily self-seed. Or if you want to grow the hollyhocks in a different area, when the pods are dry collect the seed and store in a brown bag until they can be sown in June in a shady spot. In September, choose the best place in your garden for planting out. Protect from a severe frost in winter with a layer of fallen. The plants will bloom the following year from June to July. The flower colours are always a surprise!
Extra
The large flowers of our Hollyhocks are double. You'll receive a mixture of plants with different flower colours, ranging from red, yellow, dark pink, light pink to white. The tall, sturdy flower spikes of Hollyhock provide a strong, vertical accent in your garden. Its shape combines very nicely with the more flat shape of the pink coneflower (Echinacea purpurea) or the airy inflorescence of rue (Thalictrum Rochebrunianum).
