Common hazel Corylus 'Scooter' - Hardy plant

Corylus avellana 'Scooter'
Curling branches
Whimsical curling branches. The common hazel 'Scooter' (Corylus avellana) has twisting branches! Yellow-green cat's tails bloom on the branches in early spring. The hazel is winter-hardy.
Pruning is not necessary. You may decide to shape the protruding branches. The amount of sunlight doesn't matter for the Corylus. Only water when it is dry.

If you buy deciduous shrubs in autumn they might not be looking quite as beautiful as usual. The big benefit of planting shrubs in autumn is that by spring they will be well rooted in the garden and ready to burst into growth.

This plant comes straight out of our garden to yours so plant it into your garden a.s.a.p upon receipt. Do soak the roots in a bucket of lukewarm water for about an hour before planting. Choose a spot where your hazel has room to grow - in a well drained soil, sandy and/or clay is best - and somewhere in full sun. Prepare a wide hole and loosen the soil thoroughly with a fork. Spread the roots of your hazel and plant at the right height in the hole - the top of the roots should be at least 10 cm under soil level. Fill the hole with soil, heel well in and water immediately. Corylus avellana (common hazel) will thrive in any moisture retaining soil. Add some well-rotted manure to improve poor soil.

Common hazel will thrive in normal sandy to clay soil. Best spot is a sunny one for this little shrub. Only prune when you think it absolutely necessary. This shrub will reach about 4 m high over 10 years.
