Planting
Bellflower is a perennial that will thrive in the garden. Prepare a suitable hole in well-drained fertile garden soil. Improve your soil by mixing in some garden compost or well-rotted manure. Plant campanula at the appropriate depth in the hole - the top of the root ball should be just slightly below ground level. Fill the hole with soil and press firmly down. Water immediately after planting. This plant will thrive in full sun or part shade in loose, fertile soil.
Potted Campanula
Bellflower is a perennial that makes excellent ground cover. Expect to see the stems covered with violet blue flowers all summer long. Also beautiful when planted together with roses. Its compact habit makes it very suitable for a planter. Campanula is also a great choice for a large container or hanging basket. It makes a superb plant for the rockery.
Care
Water your campanula regularly to prevent the soil from drying out. Remove the faded flower stems regularly to encourage reflowering. For extra abundant flowering of your Campanula portenschlagiana, Bakker recommends adding plant food to the watering can on a regular basis during the summer. Cut off any withered leaves come spring.
Extra
Campanula portenschlagiana is one of the most abundantly flowering campanulas. This fast and low-growing perennial is really very abundant, and very long-lasting too. Enjoy these gorgeous star-shaped flowers from early June until late August. They grow to a height of 10-15 cm. During mild winters, campanula can retain its foliage.
