Insect magnet

Want to enjoy buttonbush (Cephalanthus occidentalis) everywhere? It's possible with the standard buttonbush. The bush does well in a pot thanks to its stem. This means that the plant is perfect on the patio or balcony as well as in the garden! The white globe-shaped flowers bloom in the summer. An added benefit: they attract insects!
The occidentalis is fairly winter-hardy, although it can be damaged by extreme frost. Position the plant in a sunny spot. The buttonbush prefers well-drained soil. Keep the soil slightly moist at all times, however, the plant can also handle being dry for a short period.

Planting
What do I need?
  •   A trowel
  •   Garden peat, compost, hydrograins and sand
  •   Water

Water first
Place the Buttonbush in a bucket of lukewarm water first.

In a pot
Add sand, garden peat, hydrograins and compost to a large pot and then plant the Buttonbush. Place the shrub at the correct height, so that the top of the root ball is just below ground level. Fill the hole up with potting soil and press firmly. Water the Buttonbush right away.

In the garden
The strong Buttonbush thrives in wind-protected, sunny locations. The deciduous yet winter hardy shrub can withstand damp soil. Through a clay soil, mix a lot of potting soil. Create a spacious hole for planting and till the soil well. Add sand, garden peat, hydrograins and compost to the hole and then plant the buttonbush. Place the shrub at the correct height, so that the top of the root ball is just below ground level. Fill the hole up with potting soil and press firmly. Give the Buttonbush water right away.
Care
What do I need?
  •     Pruning shears
  •     Plant food
Maintenance

To promote a repeat-flowering, cut away any dead flowers from the buttonbush. In summer, regularly add plant food to the water in the water for an extra rich bloom. Do not let the root ball dry out; the soil should be fairly moist. Cephalanthus is a hardy deciduous shrub.

Pruning

Pruning is not necessary. In March, the buttonbush may be pruned into modelled shapes. A wild shrub can be pruned back very well.
If you prune the Buttonbush back drastically, it will take a year for the shrub to recover, but it will return strongly after that. After flowering, you can prune your shrub any way you want.
Extra
The heads of the flower stem of the Standard Buttonbush consist of many white flowers. The stamens stand erect from the flowers. This creates the effect of a pin cushion. The flowers of the Standard Buttonbush smell wonderful and attract several butterflies. After flowering, you can still enjoy the display of seed heads.
