How do I plant the hydrangea in the ground?
Ensure that the root ball of the Hydrangea macrophylla is thoroughly moist. If the shrub feels dry to the touch, place it in a bucket of lukewarm water before planting. Choose a place in the shade or with partial shade. Full sun is all right as well, but only if the soil is not too dry. Create a spacious hole for planting and till the soil well. Place the root ball of the hydrangea in the planting hole at the appropriate height. The top side of the root ball should be just below ground level. Fill the planting hole up with soil, press it down firmly and water immediately.
The hydrangea grows best in very moist, humus-rich soil. Enhance the garden soil by adding compost. Keep the colour of the flower in mind during this process, which is further explained in the “Details” tab. How do I plant the hydrangea in a pot?
Care
What do I need?
• Watering can
• Plant food
• Cow manure

How do I care for the hydrangea?
Water the Hydrangea macrophylla regularly. The hydrangea does not handle dry periods or dry soil well. If you would like more flowers to bloom between March and July, add plant food for blossoming plants to the water once a month. Add cow manure to the soil in the early spring. When should I prune the hydrangea? The hydrangea flowers on branches that grew the previous year. If the hydrangea is pruned in the spring, no flowers will bloom in the summer of the same year. Only prune the hydrangea if it grows too large. In those cases, trim 1/3 of the shrub’s branches all the way to the ground. This will stimulate new branch formation. During the first year afterwards, there will be less flowers, but blooming will return to normal by the second year.
Remove dead branches completely. At the end of February or at the beginning of March, carefully clip off all the flowers that have already blossomed. During this process, make sure that the uppermost bud always remains on the branch.
Extra
There are two types of Hydrangea macrophylla, which grow in different ways:
• ball-shaped cluster with mostly male flowers
• flat clusters with male flowers on the outside and female flowers in the centre.
The Hydrangea macrophylla Magical® blossoms in ball-shaped clusters. This hydrangea therefore makes for a lovely bouquet.
