Planting
We supply these plants in a standard nursery pot. Either pot them up to a larger one (use humus rich potting compost) or just stand it in a pretty planter on a layer of gravel that will catch the drain-off. A plant pot saucer is also practical: the water can temporarily stay in the saucer. Just water when it’s all gone – absorbed or evaporated – but not before then. Do however, keep the potting compost moist.
Rhododendron simsii likes a fairly warm place but keep it out of direct sunlight. It needs the heat to develop the flowers. In cooler environments, it will require less watering and flowering will be later and longer. Tip: move the plant around to a cooler part of the house in the evening and you can enjoy the flowers for longer!

Care
This Rhododendron simsii (often called Azalea) comes from humid, open tropical forests so doesn't like direct sunlight! Always give it some shade.
Rhododendron simsii likes it humid so spray it regularly with rain water to keep the foliage looking healthy. When the ambient air is too dry you will soon notice the leaves get dry edges. This plant doesn't require too much fertiliser either - half the dose suggested on the packaging of flowering house plant fertiliser will suffice.
Keep the plant cool and drier during the winter. Start feeding and watering again in the spring. After flowering. This plant can go in the garden once all chance of frost is passed. Give it a spot in airy, humus rich and sandy soil in part shade. Will last for years in the garden if the winters are not too severe. Don't plant it too deep as rhododendron has a shallow root system. Keep the soil moist as much as possible.
