Planting
Plant the 'Ice Cream' Tulip bulbs in the garden, in a pot or window-box as soon as possible after receipt. If not they must be kept in a frost-free area. Plant each bulb in a hole that is three times the size of the bulb - a 5 cm bulb goes in a hole 15 cm deep. Planting distance for the 'Ice Cream' tulip is 10 cm. Loosen the soil with a fork and plant the bulbs with the pointed side upwards and roots down. Refill the hole and try not to walk over that spot. Use a garden trowel or a special bulb planter to plant your bulbs. For larger groups make a wider hole and place several bulbs in it - the more bulbs, the better the effect. Plant in groups of at least six bulbs or divide 25-50 bulbs evenly over the garden border or flower bed. 'Ice Cream' Tulips in pots 'Ice Cream' Tulips thrive well in planters or window-boxes. Make sure you use fresh potting compost and line the bottom with a layer of gravel or hydro-pellets. The bulbs should be planted three times as deep as the size of the bulb – so a 5 cm bulb in a 15 cm deep hole. Planting distance for 'Ice Cream' tulips in a pot is around 7 cm. For a nice colour contrast around the base of the tulips you could perhaps sow some Forget-me-nots in the autumn. Or add them as small plants to the pot – or perhaps Anemones - in the spring. The pot will then look its best when spring arrives!
Care
The 'Ice Cream' tulip blooms are at their best in the first year following planting. We therefore advise planting new and extra bulbs every year to make your borders and pots even more colourful. The 'Ice Cream' tulip thrives best in loose, well-drained soil in full sun. Protect your bulbs grown in a pot from frost by storing the pots in a frost-free area or wrapping the pot in bubble wrap. Water well during dry periods. Tulip bulbs that have not yet been planted in the garden are sensitive to frost but once planted out in the garden, they are perfectly hardy.
Tulips planted in pots are more sensitive and will need to be protected in one of the following ways:
  • Store your potted tulips in a frost-free area that doesn't get too warm - they do need the cold.
  • Wrap the pot(s) in bubble wrap for extra protection.
  • If you line their pot(s) with bubble wrap before adding soil and planting your bulbs, your tulips will already have some protection.
Extra
These double 'Ice Cream' tulip flowers are really exceptional. The petals in the middle are pure white and they are surrounded by outer petals of a deep-pink colour tinged with green. The centre has a double ring of petals and when these tulips open in full sunlight, they resemble the peony.
