Planting
In spring Delosperma can be planted directly in the ground. Prepare a suitable hole in fairly dry, well-drained soil. Improve your soil by mixing in some sharp sand. Plant the Delosperma ‘Shining’ Mix at the correct depth in the hole. The top of the root ball should be just slightly below ground level. Fill the hole with soil and press firmly. Water immediately after planting. This plant grows best when placed in complete sunshine. Ice flowers are well suited for growing as ground cover. Delosperma in a flowerpot Ice flowers are excellent for planting in pots, window-boxes or containers, as long as there is sufficient drainage. Use sandy soil enriched with some potting compost. They can survive the winter outside as long as rain water can drain away properly.
Care
Delosperma ‘Shining’ Mix is highly resistant to drought and even feels at home in poor soil. However in dry periods a little more water is required. Allow the plants to completely dry out before watering. For an extra rich bloom, it is recommended to add plant food at the beginning of summer when watering. Use 1/4 of the recommended daily amount. Remove the faded flowers of Delosperma ‘Shining’ Mix regularly in order to encourage a second flowering. You can expect beautiful flowers all summer long. Too much moisture during the winter is not well-tolerated by this plant. If necessary, a little protection is appreciated.
Extra
Delosperma ‘Shining’ Mix is an evergreen succulent from South Africa. It stores moisture in its narrow, fleshy leaves, which are used as a water reservoir for dry periods. The yellow flowers have a distinctive white centre. The Ice plant is a real rock plant, but comes from areas where it rains in summer. The plants also need water in summer for good growth and flowering.
