Planting

Plant dahlia tubers in the spring - end of April to mid-May is best for planting in the garden. Dig a wide hole, loosen the soil with a fork and add some fertile soil to the hole. Lay the Mignon dahlia tubers carefully in the hole and cover with 3-5 cm of soil at 30 cm apart. Press carefully down and water immediately. These dahlias will flower most profusely in a sunny spot.
Forcing your Dahlias
To have your Mignon dahlias in bloom earlier than normal the tubers can be 'forced'. Lay them from April in damp peat in temperatures of 15-20 degrees C. Pot them up as soon as you see shoots appear. Gradually acclimatise the Mignon dahlias to the outdoors then plant them out in the garden from mid-May (or in planters).

Using Mignon dahlias in arrangements

Mignon dahlias make terrific and long lasting cut flowers. They are however best used in small arrangements due to their short stems.

Care

Feed monthly and your Mignon dahlias will bloom right up to the first frosts. Snip off any overblown flowers to encourage reflowering. Beware of the surrounding soil becoming too dry in periods of drought.

Overwintering dahlias

Dahlia tubers are easy to store over the winter.
Dig your Mignon dahlia tubers up after the first frost. Cut the stems back to 15 cm above the tuber and label them to make sure that next spring you know which variety they are.
Shake off any excess soil and store the tubers in a crate filled with peat or sharp sand in a frost-free area. Plant your Mignon dahlias out again in the spring and you will be rewarded with their wonderful flowers again.

Extra

The genus Dahlia is classified in the family Compositae (Compositae). This family is also known as aster family (Asteraceae).
Lots of cross-pollination has occurred within this family of plants and the result is an unbelievably number of different hybrids which are divided again into different types. This resulted in all hybrids then being sub-divided into different classifications.
This particular Dahlia is classified as Mignon.
