Robust hedge
This hedge has it all! The cherry laurel 'Novita' (Prunus laurocerasus) is evergreen, glossy, fast-growing and not very susceptible to disease. Thanks to its rapid growth and large leaves, the cherry laurel quickly provides a visual barrier. For a robust hedge! For a dense hedge, we plant three plants per linear metre. The plant blooms in the spring with white flowers. The hedge should be pruned twice per year. Once in the spring and once in the autumn. For the best results, give the hedge 'beech and hedge' food.
We deliver the Prunus as bare-root stock: just the six bare branches and roots. The plants are shipped fresh from the ground. They are already two years old. This gives them additional strength, enabling them to branch out faster than they would in a nursery pot. The hedge loves the sun and partial shade. The soil should be kept slightly damp. Give it extra water during dry periods.

Planting
Plant your Cherry Laurel in a hole 60-80 cm deep. Prepare the soil by mixing in some compost and manure. If you have heavy clay soil, add a little dry sand. Soak the plants in water for one hour before planting. Divide the hedges into each hole, placing three plants for every metre. You can also plant a double row of hedges for an extra wide hedge. The top of the root ball should be equal to ground level in the garden (please note that some land will collapse). Fill with soil, and give it lots of water so that it almost turns into a swamp. It is advised to immediately prune the top of the bush after planting. Water after planting and regularly at the start of each spring.
Care
The Cherry Laurel is a strong evergreen shrub that requires minimal maintenance. Provide it with water during long dry periods to prevent the soil from drying out since this plant doesn't like dry soil. During the winter, some compost and granulated cow manure will be appreciated by this plant. Pruning is not absolutely necessary if it is a freestanding shrub, but you can cut the Cherry Laurel to maintain its shape after it blooms in June.
The Cherry Laurel can be pruned
The Cherry Laurel can be pruned twice a year in order to keep a pretty tight shape and not let the hedge grow too wide. It can be pruned for the first time in April. It is best to prune the hedge so that it is slightly wider at the bottom and gets trim towards the top. Do you prefer a straight cut? If so, tie a rope across the top of the hedge. You can prune again in mid-June, so that after June 21 (the longest day), Cherry Laurel's new hedges can grow into any of the spaces. If you don't want to damage its large leaves, then use a trimmer instead.
Extra
The Cherry Laurel can be used either as a solitary plant or in the form of a tree. Its clusters of charming white flowers appear in May (when the shrub hasn't been pruned too much). Its red and black fruits appear towards the end of summer.
