Planting
Planting
Plant the ornamental cabbages in a pot as soon as possible after delivery. Choose a pot with holes in the base to provide adequate drainage. Cover the bottom of the pot with potsherds or a layer of hydro granules. Put fresh potting compost in the pot and place the Brassica root ball at the right depth. Fill the pot with compost and press firmly. Water generously immediately after planting and put the pot in a spot in full sun or partial shade. Line a porous pot on the inside with plastic, or use an inner pot of plastic material. This will prevent evaporation and stop the root ball of the plant from drying out too quickly.
Ornamental cabbages in the garden
The strikingly coloured ornamental cabbages prefer cold weather, therefore will look quite decorative in the garden in wintertime. They are ideal replacements for filling those bare patches in the vegetable garden or do you have a flower bed where annuals have grown in the summer? Then the Brassica is what you are looking for. Plant a few fairly close together in the border or vegetable garden and create a colourful carpet bringing life back into the garden. They are also interesting plants for a decorative autumn collage on the garden table.
Care
Care
Water your ornamental cabbages regularly, the soil should not dry out. For a good growth we recommend you adding plant food regularly to the irrigation water. Protect the ornamental cabbages from severe frost and snow. Ornamental cabbages are cultivated annually.
Extra
Extra
The outer leaves of the ornamental cabbage rosettes are green, the heart of the plant will amaze you with its intense colours of red, purple or white. The edges of the leaves are ruffled. This Brassica starts to colour in autumn and is at its best in the winter. The use of vegetables because of their ornamental value is getting more and more popular. The leaves of this ornamental cabbage are edible, but rather bitter to taste.
