Golden shine

A golden shine. You can see this on the leaves of the Japanese spindle 'Microphyllus aureovariegatus' (Euonymus japonica). The yellowish leaf makes the otherwise normal hedge a stunning feature! The winter-hardy plant retains its colour all year round. You can plant the Euonymus all year round, provided temperatures have not dipped below freezing.
Trim the euonymus in the spring and summer. Position the plant in a place with plenty of sunlight. The plant only needs water during dry periods.

Planting
Make sure the root of the Euonymus japonicus ‘Pierrolino’ is moistened well prior to planting by placing in a bucket of lukewarm water. Prepare a wide hole and loosen the soil with a fork. Stand the Japanese spindle at the correct depth in the hole - the top of the root ball should be just below ground level. Fill the hole with soil, heel well in and water immediately. Euonymus japonicus ‘Perrolino’ will thrive in fertile soil – improve poor soil with well-rotted manure and fertiliser pellets. Stand your Japanese spindle in full sun or part shade. Pruning the Japanese Spindle (Euonymus japonicus) You won't have to prune this Japanese Spindle (Euonymus japonicus) too often. Just do prune if the plant grows in one colour only - to this end, early spring is best. All new shoots will then be variegated once more.
You don't really have to, but pruning is preferred to keep the colours in the plant. After pruning, the plant will grow its best colours - green, with new shoots being variegated. It also helps to shape the shrub. Pruning can often take off a lot of the variegated foliage and so shoots that are not variegated should be snipped off immediately as they tend to take over if left as they are generally stronger.
Wholly green shrubs require no pruning, other than for the space, and to rejuvenate the bush.
This evergreen bush rather lends itself to pruning into a large ball but it's not strictly necessary.
Care
Euonymus japonicus (typo Euonumus) ‘Pierrolino’ is a very undemanding and strong shrub. Make sure that the soil around the roots doesn't dry out during the first few months of being planted. The soil must be nice and loose and airy too. Mulch with well-rotted manure or fertiliser pellets in the winter – it will show its appreciation.

Although fairly hardly, do give this plant some frost protection, especially when grown in a pot. Cover the plant with garden fleece to cover it and move the pot to a light, sheltered spot. Keeping Euonymus japonicus over the winter While certainly hardy, this plant can use some protection from the severest of weather, especially if potted. If severe frost is forecast, use several layers of garden fleece to cover it. Stand in a light and sheltered spot (assuming it's potted) - overnight in a frost free shed if required.
Extra
Euonymus japonicus ‘Pierrolino’ is a popular evergreen that will only shed its leaves in the severest of winters.
Euonymus japonicus ‘Pierrolino’ is easily pruned and tolerates it well.
