Planting
Monarda ‘Cranberry Lace’ is a perennial that grows best in the garden. Prepare a spacious planting hole and loosen the soil. Improve poor garden soil by mixing compost and granulated cow manure through it. Place the root ball of the bee balm at the right depth in the planting hole. The top of the root ball should be just below the ground level. Fill the planting hole with soil and press firmly. Water immediately after planting. Monarda ‘Cranberry Lace’ grows and flowers well in a spot in full sun or partial shade in loose, nutritious soil. Monarda ‘Cranberry Lace’ in the garden The wonderful flowers of Monarda ‘Cranberry Lace’ are indispensable in a colourful summer garden border. The flowers are even more beautiful planted next to other summer flowerers, for example larkspurs (Delphinium), double daises (Leucanthemum), and the red coneflower (Echinacea). The combination with ornamental grasses is also very successful. The bee balm has a very natural charisma and is also ideal for a nature garden, where the plants can establish themselves well. On the patio the compact Monarda ‘Cranberry Lace’ looks perfect grown in a wide flower pot or patio container.
Care
Monarda ‘Cranberry Lace’ is a strong perennial. Water regularly so the soil around the roots does not dry out. Dry soil is not well tolerated, especially when the bee balm plant is grown in a flower pot. Remove any spent flowers immediately after blooming just above a side shoot and this will not only keep the plant tidy but will also improve the flowering. The flowering will continue all summer. After the first frost cut the stems back to about 3-5 cm above the ground. Cover the plants in winter with a layer of fallen leaves. In the winter give a mulch layer of compost and granulated cow manure. In the spring you will soon see new shoots appearing above the soil. We recommend you divide the plants every few years and plant them out again. When doing this discard the inner and older part of the plants.
Extra
Monarda ‘Cranberry Lace’ is a very welcome newcomer to our collection. It is an exuberantly flowering perennial with pure pink flowers. The flower heads are decorated with a large crown of petals which flower from the inside outwards, with the heart of the flower becoming increasingly larger. Ornamental flyleaves shoot from beneath the flowers, which are often also coloured pink. The leaves of the bee balm plant are very aromatic. Gently brush it once through your fingers and you will smell the special scent. It is as if you have a spicy orange in your hands!
