Planting
As soon as possible after receiving your Siberian squill (Scilla Siberica) bulbs plant them in the garden, pots or planters. If not planted right away, do store frost-free. Potted bulbs are not normally frost resistant. Plant the bulbs in a hole three times deeper than the size of the bulb - a 2 cm bulb should be planted in a 6 cm deep hole. Planting distance is about 2 to 5 cm. Loosen the soil well and plant the bulbs point up. Refill the hole and avoid walking over the soil. Plant the bulbs singly with a small trowel. For larger groups make a wider hole scatter the bulbs in that. Siberian squill grows best in loose, permeable soil in full sun or a part shade. A naturalising mix for the garden The bright-blue of Siberian Squill (Scilla Siberica) will attract attention when planted in large drifts and the more you plant the greater the impact of colour. Plant in groups of at least 15 bulbs, or divide 25 to 50 or even more bulbs evenly across beds or borders. Squill can also be grown in a flower pot or planter on the patio. Ensure fresh potting compost and put a layer of gravel or hydro-pellets in the bottom of the pot for drainage. These beautiful flowers can also be grown through the lawn or under bushes!
Care
Just plant the bulbs of Scilla Siberica and enjoy the beautiful results year after year - just allow them to naturalise and the bulbs can be left undisturbed for years on end. They will produce more flowers each year, creating a glorious natural feature in the garden. After flowering, leave the foliage to die down naturally and cut back only once it has turned yellow. If you want to replant these small bulbs then do so immediately after flowering. To protect the bulbs grown in a pot against frost, place the pot in a frost-free area or cover it with bubble wrap. Water in dry periods.
Extra
Scilla Siberica ('Siberian' Squill) originated around the Black Sea region. The narrow leaves are a fresh green and the nodding bell-shaped flowers appear in large quantities. Each bulb produces multiple flower stems. The flowers have a dark stripe down the middle of each petal. These lovely squill naturalise well over a lawn and at the foot of shrubs but will also feel at home in the rockery.
