If you let them grow to a substantial size before pruning, they will probably fail to develop new shoots. Like various shrubs, conifers do not tend to develop shoots on old wood.

Prune Lawson´s cypress towards the end of the year, from September to December. If you prune earlier in the year, the conifer may bleed. However, any dead branches may be removed earlier in the year, from March to October.
