Exotic pond

An exotic wetland plant. The umbrella plant (Cyperus alternifolius) is a bright green stunner. The stems grow so long that they bend downwards. That's where the name "umbrella plant" comes from. The aquatic plant is a waterside and marsh plant. We can plant the plant along the edge (bank) of our pond. Or we can plant the plant up to 40 cm deep in the pond. This plant is easy to care for! We can plant the hardy umbrella plant all year round. The flower blossoms in the summer.
We prune the plant slightly to shape it with a pruning shear. We remove old leaves and dirt. To encourage good growth, we add minerals to the pond water and ensure that the water's hardness level (pH value and calcium to magnesium ratio) is maintained. A location in full sun is best for this aquatic plant.

Planting
Cyperus needs watering more often than the average houseplant and enjoys standing in water. Any pot or dish that retains any surplus water will suffice, just as long as you keep some water in there.

Cyperus ‘Zumula’ likes a warm, light spot in the home but avoid direct sunlight.
Care
Keep the potting compost moist and do not allow it to dry out. Add normal plant food to the water regularly (monthly). This is a happy plant that will grow well with its roots always in water – but then do halve the amount of feed as recommended on the pack.

Spray regularly – it will appreciate it.

To keep this plant happy and growing will not be difficult as long as it is standing in water.
Extra
Cyperus originated in marshy climes of the (sub-) tropics and have their roots in water for the greater part of the year. It’s a real marsh plant!

Cyperus is separately classified as Cyperaceae.

Here’s a little factoid for you - ancient Egyptians used Cyperus to make papyrus.
