Planting
The Blue Flag Iris is a beautiful aquatic plant that is best planted in a pond basket. Line the basket with jute and fill with special soil. Plant the Blue Flag Iris in the basket, add a growth ball and sprinkle with a layer of gravel. Place the basket just below the surface or up to 10 cm deep in the pond. If your pond is too deep, you can place your basket within a pile of stones. This plant can also grow in a large tub with water. Place this plant in complete or partial sunshine. The best time to plant is between May and June. The Blue Flag combines perfectly with other aquatic plants The Blue Flag Iris is one of the most beautiful aquatic plants. You can plant a border of these beautiful coloured irises along the edge of the pond. They can be combined with flowering rush (Butomus Umbellatus), marsh arum (Zantedeschia Aethiopica) and the marsh gladiolus (Schizo Stylus Coccinea 'Major'). The beautiful Blue Flag Iris grows well in a small pond or watertight container with damp soil on the patio.
Care
The Blue Flag Iris blooms at its best when placed in total sunshine. This aquatic plant needs plenty of food and needs to be replanted each year during springtime using fresh pond soil and a growth ball. Cut off its dead leaves in autumn and remove them from the pond. If the clump grows too large by May, you can take the Blue Flag Iris out of the pond. Divide the clump into smaller pieces and plant only one piece back inside. The Blue Flag Iris is not frost tolerant The roots of the Blue Flag Iris do not tolerate frost. Therefore, protect its root ball against severe frost. You can place the basket deeper into the pond during the winter so that it stays under the ice. You can also put the Blue Flag Iris in a basket (in a tub of water) and place it in a frost-free area.
Extra
The beautiful Blue Flag Iris is originally from Canada and grows in wetlands and marshlands..
