Achillea millefolium is a perennial that thrives anywhere in the garden. Prior to planting soak the roots in a container of lukewarm water for an hour. Prepare a wide hole and loosen the soil well. Improve poor soil with garden compost and/or well-rotted manure. Stand the yarrow root ball at the correct depth - the top of the root ball should be just below ground level (approx. 5 cm). Refill the planting hole and press firmly down and water immediately. Achillea millefolium prefers a sheltered spot in full sun and a humus rich, fertile, well-drained soil.
Common Yarrow in the border
Yarrow is becoming more and more popular as a border plant. The tall flower spikes look great in any border although due to their height may be better planted at the back of the border. A lovely combination would be with lavatera, peonies and the mallow like Sidalcea oregana 'Partygirl'.
Care
Mulch with well-rotted manure in the spring. In areas with strong winds the flower spikes may require some extra support. Tie them to canes placed at the back of the plant. Keep the soil moist and encourage reflowering by regular deadheading.
Heavy soil does not particularly require any extra manure. The plant can be divided every 3 years – it is quite easy to do, just tear off the offshoots and plant them. This will keep the plant vigorous and it will produce sturdy flower stems. Achillea millefolium in wintertime This plant will die back entirely in the winter. Cover the roots with a layer of leaf litter and ensure a well-drained soil. Cut back any remaining leaves in the spring and new shoots will soon appear. Yarrow (Achillea millefolium) is an excellent hardy example.
